The Head of the Administrative Secretariat of the Ministry of Health of Kenya, Rashid Aman announced at a press conference on Saturday 9 May in Afya House that cases of Covid-19 had risen to 649 after another 28 people out of 1,611 tested tested positive for the virus.
The number of people discharged came to 207 as well as another death in the city of Mombasa brought the number of deaths to 30.
As a result, 412 cases are still active in the country.
All cases were collected by the surveillance teams of the Ministry of Health, 24 are Kenyan and 4 Tanzanian, of which 17 men and 11 women (10 in Mombasa, 9 in Nairobi, 4 in Migori County, 2 in Kajado and 1 each in Kiambu, Machakos and Homa Bay counties). According to information from the Ministry, two of the newly infected are prisoners in Nairobi prison.
Abdi Aman added that there will be further containment measures for the Eastleigh neighborhoods in Nairobi and the Old City of Mombasa, where restaurants and shopping malls will have to remain closed, no rallies or street markets will be allowed.
With a steady increase in cases in recent days, the Ministry has once again warned the public against a return to normality, stressing that Kenya has not yet won the battle against the disease.
"We have to stay at home - said Abdi Aman - We see more and more Kenyans going to metropolitan areas. This behavior is dangerous and can reverse the advantages that we have already obtained and frustrate all the efforts made".
