Kenya almost three months after the first case of Coronavirus in the country, today will cross the threshold of 3000 positive patients, of which 2028 still active and according to experts begins its climb to the peak, which could be reached between the end of the month and early July.
This is after another 127 infections have been announced in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Covid-19 positives to 2989 out of 100,683 swabs.
The Chief Administrative Secretary of Health Rashid Abdi Aman, in the daily press conference on Tuesday, June 9 at Afya House, said that the swabs analyzed in the last 24 hours were 2,247 and that of the new cases, 84 are male and 33 are female, with the youngest being an infant only 3 weeks old while the oldest is 72 years old.
124 of the registered cases are Kenyan citizens while three are foreigners. The patients healed by Covid-19 on the last day were 24. All of them were discharged from the facilities where they were staying, bringing the total number of patients healed in Kenya to 873.
Unfortunately there were other deaths: three patients died from the disease, bringing the total number of those who lost their lives to the virus to 88.
As far as the geographical breakdown is concerned, Nairobi County, as often happens, is in the lead with 62 cases, followed by Mombasa with 32. Fourteen cases were reported in Busia, four in Machakos and three in Bungoma, while Kwale and Uasin Gishu counties recorded one each.
Abdi Aman expressed concern that the pandemic in Kenya could see a surge in infection, judging by the increasing trend of positive cases compared to swabs.
"Since we recorded our first case in March, our numbers have progressively increased and today we have almost reached the threshold of 3,000," he said. "According to experts, our epidemiological curve is rising sharply, which means we are likely to record an increasing number of positive cases. In the first eight days of June, we recorded 900 cases from a pool of 19461 samples. If we go back to the first eight days of May, we recorded 225 positives from 8872 samples.
The Ministry of Health's concern is mainly for the increase in the number of patients admitted to public facilities that in some counties are already close to collapse.
