Highest number of Covid-19 deaths in 24 hours in Kenya

213 positive cases, record even for recoveries

Never before, since the Covid-19 pandemic arrived in Kenya, have there been 10 deaths in just 24 hours. It happened today, Thursday 18 June, on the day when every number is the highest ever: that of positive cases (213, bringing the total number of infected patients in the country to 4257 and the cases still active to 2681), that of swabs analyzed in a single day, 6024 (thanks to the advent of instant tests but also to a high number of swabs analyzed late due to lack of reagents) and that of patients declared cured and discharged from hospital or isolation facilities, which were 106 and bring the total of those who recovered from the Coronavirus to 1459.
Chief Administrative Secretary of Health, Rashid Abdi Aman, expressed concern at the usual press conference at Afya House in Nairobi.
"There is something wrong - he said - especially in some areas of Nairobi like Westland (25 cases) and Dagoretti (26). Residents must examine their conscience."
Abdi Aman pointed out that of the new cases, 198 are Kenyan while 15 are foreigners and as far as sex is concerned, 152 are male and 62 female. The youngest is a 1-year-old boy and the oldest is 73 years old.
The distribution of Covid-19 cases in the counties was as follows: 136 in Nairobi, 32 in Mombasa, 13 in Kajiado, 5 in Busia, 4 in Nakuru and Machakos, three in Garissa and Isiolo, 2 in Taita Taveta and Kitui, and one each in Migori, Narok and Embu counties.
"In the last few days our numbers have increased, increasing anxiety and transmitting panic among the Kenyans - continued the Administrative Secretary of Health - The possibility of a person being infected is real because the virus is unfortunately now well rooted in our community. It is only possible to contain the virus if the measures are adhered to".
Concern rises mainly in the Capital which, although closed to the outside and now in curfew and with no (apparent) possibility of aggregation, continues to record cases especially in areas with high population density.
"It is clear that the cases of neighborhoods such as Westlands, Kibera, Langata and Embakassi in Nairobi are increasing - confirmed Abdi Aman - this is an established problem and residents of these areas should assess the reasons why the numbers are increasing. Something's wrong. They have to correct this situation to prevent it from getting out of control".
The still low numbers push people in rural areas and those who travel for work to underestimate the Covid-19 and not to respect the rules. Few controls in open rooms, offices and public areas, and little respect for the rules. And a good slice of corruption, as often happens in this country.
"In recent weeks people seem particularly relaxed in adhering to the Government's measures for the Covid-19 emergency," explains Abdi Aman, "acting as if life has returned to normal. Our border points, Taveta, Busia and Namanga are also alarming. The positive numbers come from truckers who pose a serious risk to the spread of the virus. I want to remind truckers that it is mandatory for them to take the test 48 hours before they start their journey".
