Highest number of recoveries from Covid-19 care and isolation facilities in only 24 in Kenya. As many as 175 patients have been declared cured and sent home, where they will be able to finish their period of treatment even though most are asymptomatic.
It was the Administrative Secretary of the Kenyan Ministry of Health, Rashid Abdi Aman, who confirmed yesterday that the total number of people discharged in the country exceeded 1000, rising to 1048.
At the press conference on Wednesday, June 10 at Afya House, Abdi Aman also reported that in the last 24 hours 2273 swabs were analyzed and 105 new positive cases were found. At the same time another deceased patient was also registered (89 hours). The number of cases still active in Kenya is 1957, while the total number of cases exceeded 3000 to 3094.
Of the confirmed cases 96 are Kenyan and 9 foreigners, 77 men and 28 women between 2 and 77 years of age.
Nairobi is the most affected county with 43 cases. On the coast, Mombasa recorded 11 new infections and Kilifi County another 3.
Busia County, on the border with Uganda, recorded 18 cases and all of them are truck drivers as well as 7 in Turkana.
"As we can see, we are seeing an increase in the number of positive truckers at various border points. In particular in Busia and Malaba - said the Administrative Secretary - As a ministry, we are working closely with the Busia county government to provide them with the necessary support to address the situation.
Abdi Aman also thanked the health workers thanks to whom it was possible to record a high number of recoveries from the virus.
The Ministry noted that, at the moment that most of the positive cases and patients admitted to the facilities are slightly symptomatic or even asymptomatic, there is no need for them to occupy hospital beds, especially in recent days when the number of infections continues to rise.
"There are those who do not need specialized care - confirmed Abdi Aman - For them, home care will help to free our medical staff to deal with urgent cases".
Kenya will therefore be the third African country after Nigeria and Ghana to adopt the home care system for non-serious patients.
Family members will be adequately trained as home care assistants, thanks to new guidelines issued two days ago by the Government, and will be supervised by medical officials and public health workers.
The guidelines provide for special care procedures, medical monitoring, but also community involvement through the tried and tested "nyumba kumi" system in which the neighbourhood committee helps to enforce the rules.
These rules, however, are not easy to adapt to the Kenyan way of life and therefore need to be flexible:
Among the recommendations of the Ministry of Health is to place the patient in a well-ventilated room, with limited movement in the house and minimal shared space, preferably separated from the rest of the family members, in addition to the usual precautions of gloves, masks and the use of disinfectants.
Caregivers should also be limited to one person, while visitors should not be admitted until the patient has fully recovered.
