Social Media blocked during Kenya elections?

Govt is thinking about solutions to prevent tensions

18-07-2017 by redazione

Two or three days without Facebook, Twitter and other social media in Kenya.
This is the solution that the Government, through the Communications Authority, may take from August to the day of the results, presumably on the 10th, to prevent misinformation, faked news, and other manipulations that could create tensions in the country.
The idea came from the head of the National Commission for Cohesion and Integration Francis Ole Kaparo, who announced that the Commission is already working on this possibility with the Authority.
At the same time, the government is considering prohibiting specialized companies from conducting polls outside polling stations, so-called "exit polls", and not allowing newspapers, television channels, and internet sites to publish voting projections on voting and voting days ballots.
The chairman of the Authority, Francis Wangusi, has already warned the media that it will be forbidden to publish results other than official ones and before the election commission (IEBC) has spoken.
It will be difficult to avoid the propagation of partial results, in the era of easy and unbridled communication.
However, Wangusi denied the rumors that the Kenyan Government would want to "disconnect" the internet across the country.
"I do not know if we will come to shield social media, but we will certainly be very vigilant and inflexible on any abuse and attempt to destabilize," he said.
