He was arrested this morning, a few hours after the Attorney General Noordin Haji had issued the arrest warrant with multiple charges to be answered, the most striking of which concerns the alleged removal of 357 million shillings from the coffers of his County Government, that of the capital Nairobi.
The umpteenth case of corruption that the State is facing concerns the Governor of Nairobi, Mike Sonko, one of the most popular and powerful people in Kenya.
After the arrest order, the police tracked down the Kenyan politician to you on the way to Mombasa. According to local agencies and the social profiles of the Anti-Corruption (EACC), Sonko was trying to escape capture by avoiding a roadside check, but had to grant himself to law enforcement agencies and will now be called to account for embezzlement, illegal acquisition of land and a series of other economic crimes, as the Attorney General himself wrote on his Twitter profile.
Among Ministers of the Republic, Governors and high State officials, this is the eighteenth excellent arrest of this year. Along with Sonko's name, other arrest warrants were issued concerning several of the men in his entourage.
The war against corruption in a country that wants to restore public debt, not dissipate resources and invite other foreign investors in a more affordable Kenya is continuing without quarter.
