October 17th new Kenya elections

IEBC gave the date for Kenyatta-Odinga duel

04-09-2017 by redazione

The new elections in Kenya will take place on Tuesday 17 October.
This was decided by the IEBC Electoral Commission, the same as that which was called into question by the Supreme Court of Kenya for not having conducted the votes last August in a manner consistent with the Constitution.
In fact, Judge Cap David Maraga had set aside as maximum time 60 days after the sentence, but just yesterday the Minister of Interim Education and Minister of National Security Fred Matiang had asked the IEBC to try not to convene the new elections beyond the date of 17 October, to make the end-of-year exam sessions easier for primary and secondary school pupils.
This request has been accepted by the Commission, despite the fact that the time taken to prepare everything is really short, compared with the time taken before the actual elections. For this reason, hurry reigns supreme, even to end this political crisis that has blocked a country in economic and social growth.
The two contenders Kenyatta and Odinga, moreover, are already back in the electoral campaign around the country and both are sure of the final victory.
The Opposition and civil society call for at least three members of the IEBC Commission to be torpedoed, which are referred to as the possible perpetrators of electoral fraud. But the final ruling on why the elections have been annulled will only come from the Supreme Court in two weeks time.
