Over 1000 Covid-19 deaths in Kenya, no panic but...

Why pandemic is a threat also for foreigners here

02-11-2020 by redazione

One thousand deaths from 26 March 2020 to yesterday, 1 November, are not at all many for a country of 53 million inhabitants. Surely there are many, but many more deaths from malaria but also from infections still present especially in poor and rural areas such as cholera.
The difference is that Covid-19, for experts and public opinion, must be stopped because it is highly contagious and can affect everyone indiscriminately, not only the poor, derelict and perpetually forgotten by governments.
So Kenya, like the rest of the world, daily celebrates as a real threat numbers that, if they referred only to limited categories, would probably be ignored.
The danger therefore becomes tangible, for example, also for foreigners living in Kenya, as they move among a local population (made up mostly of the vulnerable categories mentioned above) that hardly respects the rules at all.
If we add that most of those who should be enforcing the rules are only concerned with drawing personal benefits from this situation, the picture of the danger for those living in Kenya who have never experienced serious health threats is one that is done.
It was a necessary introduction and already mentioned other times to say that however, the 1000 deaths that Kenya exceeded yesterday, with the 17 deaths of Covid-19 that raised the total to 1013 deaths in the country, is still a figure to take into account, as well as the 55877 positives recorded in eight months. The percentages also concern the cases by swab, yesterday 15% was detected (685 positive, of which 26 foreigners, out of 4433 tests) and has been fluctuating between 15 and 20 for a few days. Asymptomatic patients continue to be nine out of ten.
However, in the last 24 hours 231 more patients have been discharged, 130 from the home care programme and 101 from hospitals throughout the country. The total number of cures recorded is now 37,194.
The distribution of cases by county on Sunday 1 November is divided as follows: Mombasa 203, Nairobi 202, Busia 95, Nakuru 18, Kiambu 18, Bungoma 18, Kilifi 17, Kisumu 17, Embu 17, Kajiado 15, Kakamega 14, Kwale 8, Machakos 6, Kirinyaga 5, Kericho, Murang'a, Taita Taveta, Turkana and Tana River 4, Homabay 3, Isiolo, Kisii 2 and Garissa 1.
Currently Kenya's health care is holding up, but fears rising numbers in the coming weeks, so there will be new decisions that could involve tighter controls and some restrictions, though not a real lockdown.
At the moment there are about 4800 patients in the home isolation programme and related care, 1271 people admitted to healthcare facilities, 53 serious cases are in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), another 31 are in ventilatory support and 22 in supplementary oxygen. 17 are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).
