A further 149 recorded cases of Covid-19 infection, reported on the afternoon of Friday 26 June, bring the number of infections in the country to 5,533.
The cases were detected on the basis of 3090 targeted swabs, but the percentage of the last 24 hours is higher than the average of the last weeks, reaching almost 5%.
Speaking at the usual daily press conference at Afya House, Chief Health Administrator Rashid Abdi Aman said that 48 patients were discharged during the same period, bringing the total number of those who recovered from the virus to 1,905.
Unfortunately, five more patients died, bringing the total number of patients who lost their lives to 137. No more than four deaths had occurred since June 18. At that time the record was reached, in 24 hours ten infected people had lost their lives.
There are 3481 cases still active in the country.
"Of the 149 new Coronavirus positives, 148 are Kenyan and one is a foreign citizen - confirmed Abdi Aman - 94 are male and 55 are female. This confirms the incontrovertible fact that men are more likely to contract the virus. As are drug addicts. We invite parents and guardians to monitor the habits of young people. Those who use drugs are more likely to have serious consequences if they contract Covid-19, due to the increase in their immunodeficiency, as well as the poor hygiene and the harmful culture of the division of their tools to take drugs".
The cases referred to in the latest bulletin are distributed in the following counties: Nairobi 73, Mombasa 20, Kajiado 15, Siaya 13, Machakos 3, Kilifi, Nakuru, Nandi, Bungoma and Isiolo 1.
