One hundred days after the first case of Covid-19 in Kenya, the country has the highest number of infections in 24 hours, with a worrying percentage of positive swabs, although as always we must point out that most of them are asymptomatic and there are very few serious situations requiring intubation and intensive care.
It was Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe who announced 260 new positives from Afya House, at the same time explaining the efforts made and the results achieved in the first 100 days since the first case of coronavirus arrived from the United States in Nairobi on 13 March.
"From having 80 beds in intensive care throughout the country, in 100 days we did a tremendous job," admitted Kagwe. "We had never had to quarantine anyone, everything was new to us and we were not prepared for a pandemic. Now we have 500 at Kenyatta National Hospital alone and we are confident that in the next two weeks each county will have 300 beds as requested by President Kenyatta.
Out of the 260 cases on Sunday, June 21, found through the analysis of 3651 swabs, 176 are men and 84 are women. The youngest positive is only 7 months old and the oldest is 90 years old. The total infections in the first 100 days of Covid-19 in Kenya are 4738 and the cases still active are 3008.
Furthermore, between Saturday and Sunday, 21 patients were discharged and declared cured, bringing the total to 1607.
"Unfortunately we also lost two other citizens because of this virus - confirmed the Minister of Health - which brings the number of deaths in our country to 123".
In terms of geographical division, Nairobi reported the highest number of positives, 157, Mombasa follows with 42 while 15 new cases are reported in Kwale County, on the border with Tanzania. Next come Kiambu (14), Machakos (9), Kajiado (7), Migori (3), Nakuru (3), Busia (3), Homa Bay (2), while Kilifi, Kisii, Kisumu, Kakamega and Laikipia counties each recorded one case.
"We are aware that the national economy is going through a serious crisis, but we are also in the midst of a health emergency, we must be able to reconcile the interests with the protection of the lives of our citizens - concluded Kagwe - the virus will stay with us for some time, everyone must take responsibility to contain it, find it and isolate those who contract it. We are ready to fight the battle and come out victorious".
