The first serious increase in cases in Kenya has arrived.
The Ministry of Health has just confirmed 22 new cases of Covid19 positive cases in the country, of which 21 are in isolation and only one is hospitalized.
This exponential growth in just 24 hours, after days of traveling between 7 and 9, brings the total number of coronavirus cases from 59 to 81, while the death toll remains at one. Of all 81 hospitalized only one presents critical conditions but since yesterday they are stationary, on the others with mild or moderate symptoms, there is confidence in the continuous improvement.
There are no Europeans in the new cases: 18 of the positives are Kenyan, two Pakistani and one Cameroonian (a country where the virus is spreading worryingly). As for the division into counties, apart from Nairobi, the cases occurred in Kakamega (1), Kiambu (2), Kilifi (1 new case), Machakos (1), Mombasa (7), Murang'a (1) and Nyamira (1).
Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe, speaking at Afya House, confirmed the figure after 300 swabs were taken in the last 24 hours.
The Minister also confirmed that the French citizen who had been found positive in a hotel in Diani Beach, after the treatment of the case has returned to his country and so will the other foreigners (a second Frenchman and a Mexican) who had mild symptoms, as soon as they have completed treatment. In the meantime, the Government is working to improve the effect of its interventions.
"We are looking for help all over the world to deal with the emergency and to be able to think particularly about the most vulnerable groups - said Kagwe - for now the Government has faced the emergency with its own resources. The World Bank is approving a credit of 50 million dollars, but the problem in the world is now more focused on the shortage of tools and materials, so from the next few days we will start the national production of masks and other materials".
The Minister thanked and praised all Healthcare employees: "We have very well trained doctors and nurses who have trained but are not used to dealing with infectious diseases, we have already had emergencies in the past".
Kagwe concluded by answering a question about a possible lockdown.
"Every solution is already on the table of the Government - he said - but the preparation is a very serious fact, we can not face a big commitment like this without ensuring the weakest categories that will have assistance. In our country we cannot lock people indoors, especially where indoor environments would lead to shorter distances than outdoors. For us, physical and social distance is much more important than locking ourselves indoors. It is fundamental not to add other decrees, but to respect those we have already given. Stay at a distance from each other".
