Kenya recorded 178 cases of Coronavirus on 3918 samples tested in 24 hours. This is the first data of the Covid-19 bulletin issued on Thursday 25 June by the Ministry of Health of Kenya, on the day when the World Health Organization praised the efforts made by Africa to equip itself in the fight against the pandemic.
This latest figure brings the total number of infections in the country to 5384.
During the usual press conference, this time held at Kenyatta National Hospital, the Head of the Department of Health Mercy Mwangangi said that 34 patients were released from dedicated facilities, bringing the count of certified cures to 1,857.
At the same time, Mwangangi also announced that 2 people have succumbed to the virus, bringing the total count to 132 Covid-19 victims in Kenya.
Of the 178 cases in the last 24 hours, three are foreign nationals and 175 are Kenyan. 123 are men and 55 are women. The youngest is 1 year old and the oldest is 78.
Nairobi is the county with the most positive results, exactly 100. They follow Kajiado with 21, Migori 17, Kiambu 16, Busia 8, Mombasa 7, Machakos 4, Nakuru with 2 and Uasin Gishu, Taita Taveta and Kericho who had 1 case each.
"The Nairobi neighborhoods of Kwangware, Kilimani and Westlands still remain hotbeds - admitted Mwangangi - and we will continue to monitor the spread of the virus in those areas. Mombasa has also been put on high alert. This means that you are still at high risk of contracting the virus if you are in Mombasa and Nairobi.
The Head of the Health Department was at Kenyatta Hospital to inaugurate together with the Minister of Telecommunications and Technology Joe Mucheru a professional care centre where health workers will receive continuous updates. The center also includes a call center that will deal with all health issues.
"During this difficult period for many, the health call center project will serve all health care centers in Kenya," said Mucheru. "It is our intention to expand these call centers and make sure that Kenyans seek help at all times.
As said, the World Health Organization has officially congratulated Kenya and other African nations for the way they have set up health security and the continued growth in facilities and pandemic prevention.
"African states have now developed the capabilities of their laboratories to test the population," said WHO Chief Teodoros Ghebreyesus, "the virus is accelerating and everyone must be prepared to fight it.
The WHO also appealed to researchers and pharmaceutical companies not to leave Africa behind in the testing and distribution of the vaccine, whose preparation and launch time could be shorter than expected.
