The latest data of Covid-19 cases on the rise in Kenya, especially in relation to the swabs carried out and the poor application of health directives by the population are worrying not only the Government and residents, but also many foreigners who had initially decided to stay in the country, some for work and some for a prolonged holiday.
This is not only the case of the Italians who reported to their Embassy in Nairobi and the citizens of the European Union who filled the two flights organized for today by Ethiopian Airways (Nairobi-Addis Ababa with different connections to European countries including Italy and Qatar with Nairobi-Doha flight with connections also to Rome and Milan), but also that of 400 Chinese citizens who asked their diplomatic representatives in Kenya to take advantage of two commercial state flights to return to their country, citing fear and insecurity. The first of two flights of 200 passengers each, organized by Southern China Airlines, departed yesterday from Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
In the note delivered to their Embassy, the Chinese say they are concerned about the public health situation in view of a possible pandemic emergency greater than the one experienced so far, and think that they would not be able to bear the costs of private facilities in case of contagion. At the same time they point the finger at the Kenyan citizens' lack of awareness of the dangerousness of Covid-19. According to the Asian citizens, the hygiene and preventive rules are respected to a minimum and this fact could contribute to the uncontrolled expansion of the virus.
Local politicians have also intervened on this issue and the Administrative Secretary of the Ministry of Health Abdi Aman himself has asked his citizens for the umpteenth time not to underestimate the virus, also in the light of the growing number of data and the circulation of unreliable swabs.
Also according to the Head of the Department and number two of the WHO in Africa Patrick Amoth "we will probably see an increase in cases in the coming days, we have not come out of the tunnel at all and we must be careful".
