A good read, about past times and those who dream of reviving them, until reaching the origin of those ancient tales narrated here. It's the Kenya of «Lord of the prairie», the latest book by the spanish writer Javier Yanes.
"My grandfather was used to tell me stories about Africa..." this is how the novel begins and starts catching the reader with the story of the young Curro Mencia from Madrid who, upon his scottish grandfather's death who had spent many years in Eastern Africa during the colonialism, remembers all the stories of an Africa which, maybe, no longer exists. So, Curro decides to go along this Africa, first evoking those tales and then in the reality.
A trip to Kenya which becomes a trip back to his roots.
«My grandfather was used to tell me stories about Africa. I remember one, about a farm near the equator. One day, the owner, an english colonizer, decided it was a good idea to rear ostrichs as, at that time, the London fashion of women's plumed hats was all the rage.
He called his men to build a corral and then started hunting their first specimen. Soon, they saw a wonderful male, high like a harbour crane and with a plumage worthy of a chancellor. They fastened it tight and dragged it inside the corral while the bird, very angry, was kicking hell for leather in the light of the african sunset. The colonizer thought that, maybe, if they closed the bird eyes, as commonly done with hawks and parrots, the bird would have calmed down. At the end, the ostrich is always a bird...»
