Whether it is an electoral move or not, what is important to over 15 million workers who are interested in it, in Kenya from tomorrow the minimum wage is increased by 18%. President Uhuru Kenyatta announced this during the Celebration of the Workers' Day in Uhuru Park in Nairobi.
Kenyatta also announced that salaries below the 13,475 shillings will not be taxed and that there will be important detasions also with regard to extraordinary and other bonuses.
Kenyatta explained that he had listened to the demands of the trade unions and believed that growing employment in the country should be rewarded to improve the quality of services offered in all categories.
The lowest wages in Kenya vary according to the zones (higher in major cities such as Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, average in some Rift Valley districts and lower in the rest of the country) and range from a minimum of 296 shillings per day and 5.844 Per month for unskilled workers, up to 1,190 per day and 24,719 for professionals.
The rise in the minimum national wages promised by Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta during the May 1st celebrations is already a reality.
