Since the last four months, something extraordinary has been happening in Malindi that we hope will sooner or later become normal and teach this normality to other cities and towns in Kenya as well.
Even yesterday, Saturday, July 13, citizens supported by more and more associations and institutions, took to the streets to clean a district of Malindi.
We have already said it and we will repeat it endlessly: on the one hand there are those who arm themselves with rakes, spades, wheelbarrows or simply latex gloves, on the other hand there are people who talk to the inhabitants of the area, with the shopkeepers and explain why it is important to clean up, separate the waste and also how it is possible to monetize by participating in the great chain of recycling.
The motto "Trash is cash" in Kenya can become a way to lift oneself from the poverty line, to maintain one's own business and at the same time improve one's quality of life and the appeal of the place where one lives and works.
Clean Up Day in July was attended by employees of three ministries in the County, the Environment, Health and Tourism. In addition to executives, employees and officers of the Municipality, the regional manager of NEMA, Kenya Wildlife Service, employees of Ocean Beach Resort and Tropical Village hotels, and many local associations, women's groups and neighborhood representatives.
Malindi Green and Blue is a growing movement with ambitious but achievable goals, such as buying machines to chop plastic and sell it to companies that recycle it, producing their own bins for separate collection, thus activating a vicious circle that, without spending money and educating on the intelligent collection of waste, will clean Malindi without expense. 
Believe it or not, it is the only way to solve one of the problems that does not concern only Malindi and Kenya, but many other realities of the world.
The next Clean Up Day in Malindi will be Saturday, August 10 in Lamu Road.
