Kenya, light restrictions of President Kenyatta

Counties to remain open, curfew at 9pm

04-11-2020 by redazione

It was expected to be worse.
From President Uhuru Kenyatta, at the end of the sixth session of Covid-19 emergency meetings with Ministers and County Governors, came a firm and direct speech but in the end the immediate restrictions were "light".
No county closures and general lockdown as pessimists could have expected, no closure of bars and restaurants or other economic activities, but above all the promise to implement tighter and stricter controls on those who will not respect pandemic protocols.
"This is not the time for popular decisions, but it is the time for sincerity - began Kenyatta - together with the National Emergency Committee and the participants in the extraordinary sessions we first decided that we will have to work together to make compliance with the rules effective. For this reason, a special security unit of the Government will be set up which will work closely with the counties to check that citizens respect the rules and that every citizen becomes the controller of himself and others".
The main restrictions concern especially the extension of the curfew by one hour. From this very evening it will start at 10 pm instead of 11 pm with the obligation for all bars, restaurants and public services to close at 9 pm. The curfew has also been extended until 3 January 2021.
In addition Kenyatta has ordered that all political and social meetings be suspended for 60 days.
Government employees over 58 years of age will have to work from home.
School classes preparing for examinations will not be closed and the rest of the schools will reopen for the new school year in January 2021.
The full decisions of the President of the Republic of Kenya will be published shortly.
