Farewell Lino Marano a "book" of East Africa

A life in Somalia, Ethiopia and Malindi

27-02-2020 by Freddie del Curatolo

It is said that those who were born or have lived a large part of their existence in Africa are part of a library of souls who, through their accumulated experiences and their ability to tell the story of this Continent, keep it alive. If this is so Pasquale Marano, called Lino was one of the precious volumes of the Italian library in East Africa. This book was burned yesterday in Malindi by the fate of us common mortals, but those who have read even a few pages of it will not forget it. Lino had been ill for a long time, he died last night at Afya Hospital after being hospitalized in the morning. Born seventy years ago in Mogadisho to a family of Apulian entrepreneurs who had moved to the then Italian colony, Lino studied and later also taught a fine Italian school in the Somali capital. His sense of adventure, ability to reinvent himself and vicissitudes with alternate fortunes had brought him to Ethiopia where he started a family and then to Malindi where his heart of "african born" had found a home. Many residents and tourists who landed on the Kenyan coast remember him as a hotel manager and Cicero of savannah at Buffalo Camp. Always dispensing useful advice, available smiles and opening his African book for everyone.
