Closing hour, kenyan restaurants protest

Associations want to open until 8pm

14-06-2020 by redazione

The restaurateurs and managers of Kenyan restaurants and bars serving food & beverage do not fit in and ask the Government to review the decree that does not allow them to extend the operating hours at least until 8 p.m., after President Kenyatta reduced the curfew, extending public activity until 9 p.m..
Trade associations asked yesterday with several statements to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of the Interior to meet their needs, to help a sector that is experiencing huge losses due to the loss of customers who can not use their services during the busiest hours, i.e. pre-evening and dinner.
The national president of the Kenyan Restaurateurs Association, Alice Opee, has publicly called for facilities to operate until 8 p.m., adding that the shorter working hours imposed by the state make their efforts to reopen in accordance with Covid-19 laws futile.
The exhortations of the Ministry of Health, which warned the owners of bars and restaurants that keep the business open beyond 4 p.m. (later corrected by Government spokesman Cyrus Oguna nelle17) of the risk of having their licenses cancelled forever, did not please the category, but also the hotels that were preparing to comply with the emergency but to offer their service they must also be able to organize evening openings.
The restaurateurs are asking the Government to act consistently, because if it is true what Uhuru Kenyatta said, that the new late curfew starting time must be used by companies to get their employees home on time, one wonders why restaurants and pubs are not considered activities like the others and must continue to suffer the crisis caused by the pandemic.
Some locals in the country have also reported that they have organised double shifts of staff, allowing all their employees to receive a salary, and that they have arranged transport services for their return home. This is in addition to all the provisions that they have already had to put in place, such as staff buffers, health and temperature control devices, reports for social distances with seat reductions, Plexiglas at checkouts and so on.
New guidelines for hotels are due to be sent out in the next few days, but restaurateurs hope that at least the timetables for their services, which also include take-away and home delivery, will be revised.
