As is well known and already reported in the main press, the shareholders' meeting of Air Italy, i.e. Alisarda (the majority shareholder Aga Khan) and Qatar Airways through the company AQA Holding Spa decided to put the company into liquidation.
This resolution, another blow for domestic air transport, is also a hard blow for Italian tourism in Kenya, as well as in many other countries around the world. In practice it means that from next February 25th the two flights a week operated by Air Italy from Milan on Mombasa via Zanzibar will be cancelled, while those operated from today until February 25th will be performed by other carriers.
The company, through its website, has assured that those who have already paid for a ticket from 25 February onwards will be compensated in full or if necessary re-routed on other aircraft with other dates and times. For refunds: tickets for round-trip flights after February 25, 2020: if purchased directly via the web (Air Italy portal) or Air Italy contact center, they will be fully refunded in the manner provided by email or by writing to refunds@airitaly.com. If purchased through Air Italy ticket office they will be fully refunded by presenting themselves at any Air Italy ticket office. If purchased through a travel agency it will be necessary for reimbursement or alternative travel solutions, please contact the travel agency itself. In the evening came a statement from the Italian Minister of Transport Paola De Micheli: "It is not acceptable the decision to liquidate a company of this size without first informing the government and without seriously considering possible alternatives," she said "Therefore I expect Air Italy to suspend the decision until the meeting that we can already schedule starting from the next few hours.
