Ten days to Kenya elections: whether there'll be any...

Peaceful demonstration yesterday in Mombasa, that's the only good news

16-10-2017 by Freddie del Curatolo

Yesterday's great and peaceful demonstration in Mombasa, by the Opposition, took place in a peaceful atmosphere, demonstrating that (apart from the strongholds of Odinga and its faithful people) the country has no desire for violence and wants to restart.
Mr President or not, hope for change or security of continuity, the important thing is not to fall back into the harsh climate of ten years ago.
The 2008 post-election chaos is a lesson that Kenya seems to have absorbed and this time the international community has not been caught by surprise either.
He had recommended himself before August 8th, receiving excellent signs of relaxation from the two leaders, except to experience the anger (unjustified, because it was enough to wait for the outcome of the complaint to the Supreme Court) of the challenger Odinga who, in his opinion, was defrauded of a certain victory.
Today, two months later and broken, that victory doesn't seem so secure anymore, since the leader of the NASA alliance called himself out of the refreshment of the competition ordered by the same court.
It was impossible to accept all the requests for the organisation of the elections, nor the purging of the Electoral Commission.
Not possible, especially because not requested by the Judges' judgment.
Thus Raila said that she will not participate and her lawyers are attached to paragraphs of constitutional articles to try to cancel the entire voting process. He said so, but did not send regular press release.
Not yet, at least.
Meanwhile, exactly ten days after the vote, Kenyatta is constantly in the election campaign, a sign that wants to secure even more clear supremacy and convince the undecided and pacifists. In the last week, more than three hundred former parliamentarians, governors and county councillors have passed from NASA to the Jubilee orbit, and will carry with them significant handful of votes, for a duel that could be decided by just a few thousand preferences.
Provided that these elections are held, Kenya has now become such a democratic country that it is almost anarchist.
