With the second day between Marine Park and Tropical-Driftwood Club area ended the weekend of extraordinary cleaning of Malindi beach, implemented thanks to the Malindi Green And Blue movement with the support of the Municipality and Environment Department of Kilifi County and the indispensable donations of a series of activities and individuals that are worth mentioning and we will do it at the end of this article. Once again Malindi has responded positively to an emergency such as the floods of the Sabaki River that have filled the beach of Silversand with branches, logs and a lot of garbage, including unfortunately a lot of plastic. An image for which the citizens are not directly responsible if not for the daily neglect that leads to accumulate other rubbish where there should be more love for a destination where everyone lives better (especially the local population, compared to a few decades ago) thanks mainly to tourism.
The positive fact is also another and we will never tire of repeating this: when citizens move, the institutions respond. The County's trucks made 34 trips laden with taka taka in two days and the Municipality's volunteers were on the field twelve hours a day, together with the stoic coordinator Sabina Vivaldi. Confirming this, the County Environment Department, through the voice of its Chief Mariam Jeneby, decided to continue the cleanup today, still missing the areas from Driftwood to Coco Beach.
A special thanks goes to Equistar, the company that contracted out the work on the waterfront road and provided its caterpillar for two days free of charge, for the price of the operator and fuel alone. The Mwembe Resort had also given willingness to lend a JBC, but it was too big to enter the beach, otherwise the work could have been done completely in a day and a half.
Now the hope is that the activities on the beach will understand that it would no longer be necessary to get to this point: the idea of Malindi Green And Blue is that every hotel and activity that faces the beach (soon counted, from Scorpio Villas to Billionaire between resorts, restaurants and residences are 19) hired a worker with the sole task of raking and collecting debris brought from the sea and the rest and accumulate them in the access roads. In this case the garbage collection trucks could pass by every day to collect them. Then we would have a super-clean beach and we would also have a job opportunity for about 20 young people. We think it's worth it.
For this extraordinary cleanliness Malindi Green And Blue thanks the donations of:
Olimpia Club, White Elephant, Osteria Beach, White Beach, Milky Way, Tangier Lounge, Bar Bar, Baby Marrow, Driftwood Club, Billionaire, Eden House plus a number of private donors of all nationalities.
Together we can do a lot to make Malindi better and raise awareness among institutions and citizens who have not yet moved.
