COVID-19

Since the first case of Covid-19 virus positive patient in Kenya, a woman arrived in Nairobi from the United States via London and found positive for the swab on March 12, 40 days have passed and there are 320 cases.
For many days the capital city has been the epicentre of the infection, even if we cannot speak of a real outbreak, as in the first two weeks the positives were mainly travellers who arrived (or returned, in most cases) to Kenya landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Two exceptions were the Kilifi County Vice Governor Gideon Saburi, who arrived via Mombasa from Germany, and a French tourist staying at a hotel in Diani Beach, County Kwale. While the latter fortunately infected "only" three other people in Kilifi County before the lockdown was ordered in and out, the number of cases increased to 10.
But if you want to talk about an outbreak, something very similar happened in Mombasa and exactly at the commercial port of Kenya's second largest city.
Here after the first case, recorded at the end of March, and the first death last April 11 of an employee, and a second patient who died from the coronavirus, now there are 24 infected and they go up daily, after swabs have been placed to all the port employees.
"Kenya Ports Authority will be one of the first places where mass testing will be carried out. Recently announced the Head of the Office of National Health Mercy Mwangangi - the next two or three weeks will be very important for us, as we will begin targeted testing of quarantine centers, then health workers before moving on to mass testing in different institutions.
Since last Sunday, the mass swabs at the KPA have already seen an increase in the number of positives that are already being treated, with other contacts close to them experimenting with quarantine.
Their positivity is of great concern to Mombasa residents, who may have mingled with the individuals unwittingly.
While the surveillance teams of the Ministry of Health have been deployed to help track down possible contacts of the positive individuals, the finger is pointed at the population that in many neighborhoods moves and acts as if nothing happened, in a possible outbreak of the virus, which is also very populous. Governor Hassan Joho, after willingly accepting the closure of the county in and out, has called for the total isolation of his county.
"I am surprised to see boda boda operators still carrying four people and not wearing face masks. We will have to change the method," said Joho. "I can't understand why people don't understand that this disease is real and kills. She's outside on our doorstep knocking and it's as if we were there to open up to let her in.
On Tuesday, human rights activist Julius Ogoch, speaking to the press, also pointed the finger at the behavior of Mombasa residents in the cases of Covid-19 in the county.
"If law enforcement agencies do not implement new mitigating measures to stop the spread of Covid-19, I fear there will probably be a virus explosion in Mombasa that we will regret for life," Ogoch warned.
