The French car manufacturer Peugeot has started assembling its vehicles in Kenya at the Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers (KVM) Thika site. Peugeot is in fact the latest multinational that will be manufacturing vehicles in the plant near Nairobi.
Peugeot, who has been working for some time with his Kenyan dealer Urysia in the assembly of the 508 and 3008 car models, had already announced plans to resume production of vehicles in Kenya, but had not yet said which of the local assemblers he would use.
The cars assembled and sold on the East African market will be two: the 508 which is a saloon, and the 3008 which is a small SUV that was appointed vehicle of the year 2017 last March in Geneva.
Both models are expected to have a price of around 4 million Kenyan shillings.
Last year in the same plant, President Uhuru Kenyatta inaugurated the assembly processes of the Volkswagen Polo "Vivo".
Peugeot's decision to start assembly in Kenya is a sign of the multinational's increased confidence in the Kenyan industry, driven by the growing demand for vehicles on the local and pan-African markets.
Vehicles assembled and sold in Kenya are exempt from import duties (at 25%) and excise duties (20% of the value of a vehicle) which are levied on fully constructed imports, so they will have competitive prices.
