Never such a beautiful sea in Malindi as this year.
None of the historic residents, fishermen, tour operators and Malindi citizens have memories of a crystal-clear and blue Indian ocean in front of the town.
Virtually from the change of wind and currents, which usually comes after the small rains in November, usually the Indian Ocean portion in front of Malindi Bay, Silversand Beach and the Marine Park, mud and clay brown are transported by River Galana, which in its high course (where Sabaki is called) cuts the savannah in two, delimiting the Tsavo Est National Park.
This year, due to the terrible drought that is still hitting the country in an unusual way, the only positive effect of the lack of heavy rainfall in the hinterland is that the river has carried far less land and less natural debris.
So the Malindi Sea had nothing to envy to other more celebrated Kenya's seaside resorts, such as Watamu and Diani.
Blue and blue shades have merged with the landscapes that for at least five months a year we are used to seeing with the unusual color marrow and "savannah color".
Even the ocean temperature, less hot than usual, has influenced the clarity and crystallinity of the water, which is rarely filled with algae and has become obscured. A special year for Malindi, which is becoming less and less touristy, is precisely why it is becoming a special destination for the few who know how to appreciate certain shades, at a time when judgments are always too thin and superficial.
Malindi has a charm that many other destinations in the world will never have.
