Finally, the African Development Bank (AfDB) has agreed: Work on the construction of the transnational highway between Kenya and neighbouring Tanzania will begin at the beginning of 2020.
"The funding for the 460 km road that will connect the towns of Bagamoyo and Malindi will be approved in September - announced the Bank's Director General, Gabriel Negatu - Both the government of Kenya and that of Tanzania have developed all the requirements to open construction sites for the construction of the coastal highway.
Negatu has confirmed that the Kenya-Tanzania transnational highway should cost 75.1 billion Kenyan shillings.
On the Kenyan side the 4-lane road will start from Malindi, will cross Mombasa to Lunga Lunga, on the border with Tanzania. From here it will continue to Tanga and Bagamoyo.
The transnational highway is one of the infrastructure projects to which the East African Community is giving priority. The AfDB will finance 70 percent of the coastal highway, while the governments of Kenya and Tanzania will cover the remaining 30 percent.
