This year's Kilifi Music Festival will be the first ever zero-emissions event on the African continent.
The Kilifi New Year Festival "Beneath the Baobab", now in its fourth edition, will be a multicultural and "carbon neutral" event and will be the main event of the Festival that will last 4 days.
Zero-carbon events seek to minimise emissions through a global environmental commitment. The organizers have collaborated with the Kenyan company Wildlife Works to offset emissions through the project "Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation".
"Kilifi New Year emissions offsetting with Wildlife Works contributes to the protection of dryland forests, wildlife conservation, community empowerment and job creation in multiple sustainable industries," says Melisa Kayanda, Marketing Manager of Kilifi Festival.
The festival will run from 30 December to 2 January 2020, with over 50 artists expected to take place in three stages.
Among the international artists who will take the stage will be Osunlade (USA), Afshin (France). Seth Schwarz (Germany), Kampire and Faizal Mostrixx (Uganda), and Electric Shamba (Great Britain).
Among the main local artists are Blinky Bill, Karun, Barak Jacuzzi, Vallerie Muthoni, the Ochungulo family and others. Among the DJs expected in the show are Jack Rooster, Coco Em, Dj Paps and Dj Raph. "Not only music, the participants will also live a multicultural experience, with discussions of exchange of ideas, at Kilifi New Year University. The University is a centre that facilitates roundtable discussions on current issues such as Climate Emergency, LGBTQ Rights, Racism, Feminism and many others," Kayanda.said.
