This year, the first week of September also marks a unique event in sub-Saharan Africa: the "Maralal International Camel Derby".
The international camel festival is held on Saturday and Sunday in the Kenyan town of Maralal, in the Samburu region, not far from the desert areas of northern Kenya. 
Every year, every year, gibbed mammals come here from every country on the continent, and enthusiasts from Australia and New Zealand too. 
There are many races and disciplines: from the speed test that sees committed "race camels" to a kind of competition in the style of equestrian dressage, up to the usual election of the most beautiful camel of the annual edition. 
This year, hundreds of visitors will visit Maralal again, to witness this unusual event involving one of the most long-lived pets (it is estimated that the camel was domesticated 3500 years ago) and camelers who in some cases are very young. 
In addition to foreign tourists, this year you will also see many local visitors and this has also attracted sellers of all kinds.
Interestingly enough, the news appeared in the daily newspaper "The Star" according to which many prostitutes were also waiting for the event, who would rent a coach to reach Maralalal and offer their services to weekend visitors.
To summarise the festival, there will also be exhibitions, running and cycling competitions and other games and music that will involve the participants, making the International Derby a truly original festival, unique in its kind here.
