Just inside the many inlets of the island of Mombasa, on the side of the County of Kwale, the peninsula of Tsunza is one of the most accessible and least known natural paradises of the Kenyan coast.
It is a spectacle of lagoons, islands and thick mangroves. A favourite place for bird watchers but also for fishermen who, with their typical boats, enter a thousand labyrinths of canals and waterways that mix the salty ocean with the sweetness of the rivers that flow here.
From the beach of Mkupe to Miritini, not far from the port of Mombasa, the boats bring tourists for an excursion that already in just twenty minutes gives visions of uneven scenery, peering at the tangles of mangroves. The eye can only go to the wildlife, mostly composed of birds who prefer the cool moorland by the canals, while predators fly close to the water to catch fish.
From the eastern slopes of the peninsula, the contrast of the port of Mombasa with its gigantic cargo-lifting cranes and the ship traffic in the turning dock of the harbour.
In Tsunza the local community is developing sustainable tourism, using canoes and boats to give authentic experiences to tourists, combining them with a day at the beach or traditional lunches on the islets along the creek. For this reason, visitor areas have been set up, with traditional Kayamba and Zandale crafts and dances from the Duruma tribe, one of the nine lesser-known members of the Mijikenda ethnic group. For those who want to dive into the ancient culture of this tribe, visiting the sacred caves called "kayas" there is also the possibility of being hosted by the village communities through a local association.
