SAVANNAH

One of Kenya's largest and most famous elephants, known as Tim, died yesterday at the age of fifty from natural causes.
The iconic specimen was one of the most famous animals in Amboseli National Park and tens of thousands of tourists have photographed it and will remember its grandeur and huge tusks.
We ourselves, on malindikenya.net in December 2018, had told about when the huge old elephant had been trapped in the mud and thanks to the Big Life Foundation's intervention after hours and hours of attempts, it had been saved even if the fatigue and stress had caused a worsening of its health. The disappearance of Tim was announced yesterday by the Kenya Wildlife Service that will transfer his body to the National Museum warehouses in Nairobi where it will be embalmed and stored for educational purposes and then to be exhibited.
In a press release, the KWS recalled that the historic elephant had been the victim of a killing attempt years ago by poachers who tried to knock him out by hitting him over the head with a huge stone and piercing his ear with a spear.
But the great old man of Amboseli, thanks also to the care of man, had recovered well.
"The great patriarch Tim was an unusual male specimen - explains the KWS in the communiqué - who, unlike the other males, who leave the herd when they reach sexual maturity, was always in the company of the females and their families. Of quiet disposition, he was for years a benevolent and relaxed guardian of the peace of Amboseli, known and loved all over Kenya".
