We now repeat it every time: in Malindi, as in every part of the world, one can no longer expect saints from heaven or politicians from the armchair.
Appealing to "someone else has to do it" or "but I pay my taxes" is a sterile exercise in frustration, which in addition to worsening the mood, does damage to our health and that of future generations, affects the lives of animals and the climate and ultimately damages the bank account of those who live and work in a city that needs travelers and tourists.
Trying to be an example, but above all to solve some long-standing problems, we at malindikenya.net (the two of us, I mean...because it has to be said that there are only two of us), with the Malindi Progress Welfare Association, the Malindi GreenAndBlue Movement and the support of the sub-district office for the environment in Kilifi County, have decided to get busy.
In addition to the monthly clean-up, which is not an "event" for itself and that day or neighborhood that is being cleaned up, but is part of a broader awareness program on smart collection and recycling that is already beginning to bear fruit, there are problems that need to be addressed quickly. One of these is the landfill in the city centre, in front of the Lawford's Hotel and right behind a health clinic, the Star Hospital.
Waiting to find another site, but it's not easy. On the other hand, the situation of many Italian cities and towns confirm that today the problem of location and waste collection is one of the most difficult for a municipal administration. What can be done (and we have begun to do) for now is to limit the space of storage of waste, waiting for the arrival in the morning (which we managed to get daily) of the truck for collection. The space will be fenced, also to avoid seeing us grazing in cows and goats, and will be planted various types of trees and plants to cover.
There are already donors who have lent themselves: from Lisa and Roberto Marini of the Ocean Beach Resort to the Kassamjee hardware store. Two environmental associations are also involved in the project, people who are certainly not wealthy but who believe that improving things and their lives also depends on improving the environment around them, people who find it difficult to devote time to the environment and not as a form of snobbery or as a hobby.
Malindi citizens who have so much to teach the lions (not to use another word that rhymes) from the keyboard that they always have advice to give and so much to say, that they are ready to complain and argue, but that for the place where they decided to live or spend part of their year, do virtually nothing.
The Malindi Green And Blue movement and its clean ups, the monthly cleaning days, have done...
