Not just plastics and by-products, Kilifi County has asked the highest government environmental authority, NEMA, to intervene to ban the use of and trade in nappies for children, considering them one of the main sources of pollution of coastal land and the Indian Ocean.
County Environment and Natural Resources Minister Mariam Jenneby said disposable plastic and baby diapers were a huge part of the non-biodegradable waste.
"I urge the government and Nema to maintain a total ban on disposable plastic products and baby diapers - said the Minister - They have helped create environmental pollution factors in our community.
Environmental experts from the County have confirmed that along the roads and even the beaches of the region you can find quintals of baby diapers. In doing so, many of them will inevitably flow into the ocean, creating serious risks to marine life and flora.
The ban, he said, will also push parents to return to the traditional method of using reusable diapers that are environmentally friendly.
