The protection of Kenya's marine environment and its ecosystem has received the important support of a Hollywood movie star.
Leonardo Di Caprio, through his foundation, will finance an ambitious project for the conservation of mangrove forests in Kenya, launched by Scottish scientists at the University of Edinburgh.
The Vanga Blue Forest Project in County Kwale on the south coast, not far from the border with Tanzania, has long been active in the protection of a 460-hectare mangrove marine forest, in which there are three villages that house 8,700 people.
The mangrove forests support biodiversity, act as a natural marine barrier and provide shelter and food for many species of fish and crustaceans.
The Di Caprio Foundation has begun to collaborate with environmental experts, along with other organizations and philanthropists to protect threatened ecosystems.
Thanks to Di Caprio, new mangrove trees will be planted, as well as work to protect the existing forest. This will increase the forest's ability to absorb carbon dioxide and make international players aware of the importance of supporting these living green "lungs" in the Indian Ocean ecosystem.
The project is inspired by the university's pioneering work on the Mikoko Pamoja (Together for Mangroves in Kiswahili) initiative, which has seen staff and students work with local villagers and researchers from nearby Gazi Bay to protect threatened mangrove forests and fund community development.
