Excellent news for the economy and for tourism in Kenya.
After years of waiting, the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi has obtained the certification of Category A to be able to make and receive direct flights from the United States, including any cargo and charter.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted this status to Nairobi after a series of evaluation tests in the country.
"Achieving certification" Category One "is an important milestone in the growth and development of civil aviation in Kenya, East Africa and the rest of the continent - said Minister of Transport Kenyan James Macharia - now all the companies that have imagined direct flights from Nairobi to New York and other north American cities, may decide to implement them ".
In Africa to date only Morocco, Cape Verde, Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia and South Africa have direct flights to the United States.
This is not only good news for the tourism and for cultural and social interchange between the two countries, but particularly for business.
"With direct transport - said Macharia - we can start a series of talks for the export of our fruit and vegetables and other goods for which a reduction in travel time is critical."
