There will be no wind farm in Ngomeni, the area north of Malindi, well known to Italians for its San Marco base.
The 600 megawatt mega-power station, which would have given renewable energy to the entire coastline through the wind, will no longer be built off Ungwana Bay as planned by the Swedish company that designed it.
The project, for which a loan of €2 billion from the World Bank is ready, will be transferred to Tanzania.
According to the Swedes, as reported in the Business Daily business newspaper, the Kenyan authorities frustrated all their ambitions by asking them to reduce the scope of this project, because it was impossible to adapt the electricity grid to the plant's production needs.
That is to say, in Kenya, only small renewable energy projects are allowed, even up to 50 megawatts.
A rather paradoxical thing, considering the need to have power given by the commercial and infrastructural development of the country.
But so much so, the Swedes who had chosen the coast in front of Malindi for its steady wind, had to retire.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the Scandinavian company has been proposed to implement a smaller project and there is scope for approval.
