MALINDI GREEN AND BLUE
16-11-2019 by Freddie del Curatolo
After eight months only of honourable service and excellent work in Malindi, our SCPC Mr Philip Wambugu was deployed to Nairobi.
Mr Wambugu was the policeman that everyone would like to have in their neighbourhood. Since the first time he introduced himself to representatives of local associations and the media with what always sounds like a phrase of practice: "My office is always open and it's a public office, you don't need an appointment to talk to me. I am a public servant". We can assure you that this has been the case, he always listened to everyone.
But Mr Wambugu will be remembered by us especially for his participation in the monthly cleaning in Kisumu Ndogo area. The troubled youth and the naturally suspicious residents saw the Police Officers arrive in uniform and were prepared for the worst.
They murmured with looks of surprise: “what have the police officers come to do in our neighbourhood, if not to carry- out checks, reprisals or punitive expeditions?”
When they first saw the SCPC and everyone else wearing gloves, carrying spades, rakes and cleaning their streets, they were shocked.
"Kumbe Polisi siwabaya", so the police aren't bad, they whispered among themselves.
That perception has really changed the relationship between police and civilians, previously the officers faced ambushes while on patrol but they can now carry out their duties without fear for their lives. At the end of that Clean-up Mr Wambugu and the Progress Welfare Association Members (PWAM) AKA Malindi Green And Blue planted trees in the HGM primary school in the same neighbourhood .
In addition to his contribution in improving the security situation in Malindi, Mr Wambugu supported all environmental initiatives and participated in the past 8 cleanup activities either in person or through his officers. These activities are much more than solid waste management as they help built synergistic collaboration between the civilians and Police. Below are some sentiments from community leaders.
“The abolishment of mandatory and free housing policy saw some officers move houses 3 or 4 times for safety reasons, and by allowing them to participate in the clean-up activities they are now able to integrate with the civilians”, says Kate Mwikali ,Chairperson PWAM.
“He was a very disciplined , effective and efficient Police boss “ , Mr Phillip Chai of Billionaire and Vice Chair PWAM .
“We were just about to revive Malindi against crime to help support police in their duties” Mr Majid Swaleh , Chair Chamber of Commerce Kilifi County.
For his humanity and willingness to help, we thank him and wish him God’s protection and abundant success in his new posting. We also warmly welcome the new SCPC Mr Otieno and hope the Police and Community Collaboration continues under his watch.
