Fruitful trip to France for Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta, the first officer since the Covid-19 pandemic emergency.
With a delegation also composed by Ministers Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs), Ukur Yatani (Treasury), James Macharia (Transport and Infrastructure) and Betty Maina (Commerce), Kenyatta met at the Elysée Palace the transalpine counterpart Emmanuel Macron and, after a private conversation, both attended the signing of public-private partnership contracts for the construction of the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit freeway signed between KeNHA and Vinci Concessions.
On the sidelines of the important infrastructure partnership, agreements were also signed for the development of the Central Business District of Nairobi (CBD), for the commuter railway line at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and for the 400 Kilowatt Menengai-Rongai power transmission line.
Kenya's ambassador to France, Judi Wakhungu, said the president's visit will strengthen interpersonal and commercial ties between the two nations. Wakhungu said that the rail link between the Nairobi CBD and JKIA for commuters would help improve travel for travelers between the city center and Kenya's main international airport.
The stretch of highway that the French company is preparing to build in Nakuru will be 200 kilometers long and will improve services and trade in an area currently congested with traffic, helping to modernize the entire line connecting Nairobi to Uganda.
Beyond the contracts and concessions signed, this meeting has seen the strengthening of bilateral relations between Kenya and France. For years, the European country has contributed with funds and resources, especially in the fields of Education, Culture and Research, but as the Kenyan Ambassador in Paris reiterated, today more than 100 French companies operate in the African country, a sign that France has also focused on the economy in a country which, before the pandemic stalemate, was among the fastest growing countries not only on the African continent.
A major loan of 8.7 billion, for example, is directed to the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Project (LVWATSAN), a project that aims to improve access to water and sanitation in Kisumu. Another aid of about 7 billion will go to road rehabilitation that will improve mobility and access in the six counties of the semi-arid areas of Isiolo, Laikipia, Marsabit, Meru, Samburu and Tharaka-Nithi. The project includes the upgrading of 1,280 km of dirt roads and the improvement of 139 km of already paved roads.
