The Government of Kenya has extended the closure of its borders for another thirty days starting tonight at midnight. This means that no scheduled flights can arrive or depart from the country until next May 6, 2020.
The only exceptions will be cargo and evacuation flights for foreign nationals.
This was announced a short while ago by the Minister of Transport of Kenya, James Macharia, on the sidelines of the press conference of the Ministry of Health, which we will report on shortly.
"If you remember well the government had closed the borders for two weeks, the ban would expire tonight at midnight - said Macharia - but the emergency continues, so we decided to extend the closure of the skies for another thirty days, issuing a new decree that will take effect tomorrow, Monday, April 6. Only cargo planes and those who will come to take their compatriots to evacuate will be allowed to fly to Kenya and leave again. But they will no longer be able to land by communicating it shortly before departure, because our airports must prepare to receive them. So we ask them to schedule their repatriation flights within 72 hours and notify our authorities accordingly, otherwise they will not be allowed to land at our airports.
Macharia recalled that cargo flights are very important in this period for Kenya because they bring supplies and especially health equipment, very often the result of donations from foreign countries.
"As far as cargo flights are concerned, it is really important for us that they can land and we invite them to come to our aid - said the Minister - to bring medical equipment and other useful material to fight the emergency. In fact, on Wednesday a Kenya Airways flight has already been scheduled to go to China to get other medical equipment".
