"Wash your hands and disinfect yourselves, avoid crowds and respect social distance, walk alone and don't shake hands with anyone, stay at home and avoid the Crown".
These are the sung words of the official anthem to the resistance against the Covid-19 virus in Kenya.
It was produced by the Choir of the Republic of Kenya on direct commission from the Presidency to raise awareness among Kenyans about how best to protect themselves from the pandemic.
The video shows the elements of the choir and some dancers respect social distances and sing, although not everyone wears masks and even in the video there are repertoire images where ordinary people do not have masks. This is because the song and video were made a week ago, before the last decree issued by the government on the obligation to cover your mouth and nose at all times, not only in indoor places like supermarkets, but also outdoors in public.
"This song is inspired by the words of a speech by Uhuru Kenyatta and he approved it - explained one of the choir members to the national media - It is about raising awareness among Kenyans to follow what the Ministry of Health has recommended. Without considering these recommendations, the disease will overwhelm us. The first lesson is to take care of ourselves and our neighbours.
