In these months of pandemic, many rules have been issued to try to contain or prevent the virus in Kenya. Many are still in use and are respected, others are delegated to the responsibility of the citizens who here, as in many other countries in the world, if they have no obligations tend to forget that it is not the lack of control that renders a law null and void.
During the holidays, the government will probably leave the country open to allow those who can afford it to enjoy their holidays, and many others to move to their home villages to spend a few days with their relatives.
Precisely because of this permissiveness and increased movement within the country, cases of Covid-19 may increase and it is likely that national and county authorities will be more present on the ground to enforce the restrictive rules.
Many of these restrictions, unfortunately, also become pretexts for charging fees in the form of fines, perhaps smaller than those stipulated in the decrees and avoiding the need to appear in court. Corruption, as President Kenyatta has repeatedly reminded us, is one of the major cancers to be eradicated in the nation, at all levels.
Let us therefore recall the main restrictions that are currently in place and that the institutions could punish, even with random checks that, as often happens, do not penalise everyone, but especially those who are supposed to be able to pay the fines.
It is still compulsory to wear a mask in public places and also when walking in the street. The fine for not wearing a mask is Kes. 20,000.
For those taking public transport, be it a bus, a vehicle, a tuk-tuk or a moto-taxi (boda-boda), the fine applies to both the driver and the passenger, even if only one of them fails to comply with the rule. The driver risks having his licence withdrawn, the passenger Kes. 20,000
It is forbidden for more than two people to be in a private vehicle, unless they are members of the same family.
If you are travelling with a driver and you are not a relative, then you can only travel alone. Again, the fine is Kes. 20,000.
You may not travel outside your home after 10 p.m., even if you have been in a private home and are returning to your home.
You may not gather anywhere, even in a private home, in excess of 100 people.
We would also like to remind all tourists, residents and holidaymakers who have made Kenya their home, that the fact that Kenyans do not abide by the rules does not mean that anyone can do the same.
