LUTTO
22-10-2020 by Freddie del Curatolo
His name was Salvatore, but in Watamu everyone knew him as Sasà.
He had taken a house in the Kenyan tourist town for some years and with his wife he spent most of the winter here in peace and quiet, among beautiful walks and meetings with friends.
But in the quiet and pleasantness of living his third age at the Equator, he had dusted off a great passion and talent that had accompanied him for a lifetime: the clarinet.
He had never been a musician by trade, but he had been one of those old-fashioned barbers, a Sicilian Figaro with infinite availability and a snappy smile like the blade of a razor.
So Sasà for a few years in Watamu had found his own space to play, under the soft jazz, swing and great classics bases and revived the dinners and parties of the locality.
He was remembered at the Medina Palms, Paparemo Beach, Ascot and Turtle Bay.
His clarinet was light, graceful and international and was enjoyed by Italians, English and Africans.
Then, between one played and another, he would even fix your hair and you would understand that the hand was that of a simple and genuine artist.
Sasà as well as others of his age left for the cursed virus in Italy.
He was 82 years old and couldn't wait to return to Watamu.
My deepest condolences to his family.
