Today's Carol, Christmas 2020, is not a song but a poem, perhaps sung in a whisper as shy children do, playing on the sidelines before joining some impromptu band in the slums of Nairobi.
CHRISTMAS IN THE SLUM
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
from Kibera and Mathare
from the crib of shacks
between sheet metal, stones and poo
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
to those who want to forget
the outcasts of the slums
Poor Christians we are
Bless the eel
the sparkling wine and the panettone
with lunch and eve
eat a year's worth of family
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
to the global pandemic
do not fear, it does not attack
our hunger virus
