Wellness tourism: new rules in Kenya

Ministry Balala: "Certifications for SPA"

12-09-2019 by redazione

Kenya is also a place of well-being and its tourism draws resources from this aspect.
Facilities offering wellness services, in particular SPAs and Wellness Centres, will soon be subject to standards and certifications just like hotels.
Kenya's Minister of Tourism Najib Balala spoke about this at a meeting with the SWAA (SPA & Wellness Association of Africa) in Mombasa.
"The wellness industry in Kenya is ripe for the establishment of such standards - said Balala - which would also conform to global standards, taking into account the social and cultural fabric of our country. Thanks to the classification and improvement of the standards, we will be able to introduce training in the wellness sector also within our Utalii tourist college. I am convinced that there is potential in this type of tourism and that is why I am urging both the Tourism Regulatory Authority (T.R.A.) and the SWAAA to work together to formulate and implement a series of standards and certifications to help increase the supply to travelers and tourists.
Kenya is currently in fifth place in Africa behind Mauritius, South Africa, Tunisia and Morocco in the field of care and welfare.
The first step will be a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Tourism and the SWAA and then proceed to the filing and classification of all SPAs, evaluating criteria and services. One of the main objectives of the sector is also to lower management costs compared to the type of services, which currently do not make the sector competitive enough.
