A very strong wind and a fast tornado that passes close to the red clay soil and crops, uncovering the makuti roofs of huts and the sheet metal roofs of schools and other masonry buildings, uprooting trees and making everything fly, leaving room for a very strong storm and bringing back the calm made of devastation that for an already poor area like that of the hinterland of Malindi means having lost almost everything.
This is the scenario that appeared yesterday afternoon in the area of Langobaya and the village of Mkondoni, already hit two years ago by the great flood of the Galana river valley.
There is no peace for these people and not even for the Italian NGO Karibuni Onlus that for the second time will have to face an emergency due to weather conditions.
This time the greenhouses of the Flora Nursery were destroyed, where tomatoes and various vegetables are grown, but also the henhouses whose roofs were uncovered with collapsed beams. Major damage was also done to the schools supported by the NGO and the main farm.
"It was a moment, and once again we suffer the insults of time - explains the President of Karibuni, Gianfranco Ranieri - we will have to assess the damage and then rebuild, hopefully with the help of those who have always supported us and who can understand our little drama and the heaviest of all the people we support in this area.
Yes, because between Langobaya and Mkondoni there are entire families left homeless, which means losing practically everything, especially when the walls of the hut are made of mud and the wavy top of the head is the result of months and months of savings. There is also talk of injured people, affected by wood from devastated structures.
From tomorrow, as always, it will patiently rebuild because Africa has always given, resumed and returned, but climate change seems to have also displaced the Black Continent and its natural cycle.
