Today in Malindi is celebrating the popular heroin of Mijikenda Mekatili Wa Menza culture.
This is the most important traditional celebration of the Kenyan coast population. The Mijikenda ethnicity represents the nine tribes living north of Malindi to the border with Tanzania.
Every year in this period is remembered the figure of the popular heroin Mekatilili, lived on horseback between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The woman, born in Kilifi's hinterland, was the first "warrior" to fight British authorities and was imprisoned in a labor camp in the north of the country, from where she was able to escape by reaching Malindi on foot and resuming her Revolutionary activity. The giants and the other eight tribes that make up the Mijikenda ethnicity (Chonyi, Kauma, Kambe, Ribe, Rabai, Jibana, Digo, Duruma) parade this morning for Malindi and gathered together with elders (kaya elders) in the center MADCA near the new market. While last night they celebrated with a traditional cultural evening at Malindi Museum and later a concert at My Way. Tomorrow, finally, will be the first move to the Cultural Center of Gongoni and then to Bungale, a village inland (beyond Marafa) where Mekatilili Wa Menza was buried.
