The President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, and the President of Somalia, Mohamed Farmaajo, met yesterday at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, in the presence of numerous international Heads of State.
The event represents a step forward for the two States that have long been experiencing a climate of institutional frost because of the dispute over maritime territorial limits. At the end of the meeting, moderated by the Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in the margins of the General Assembly, the two leaders of the neighbouring countries declared that they had agreed to return to normal relations between the two nations, even though they had not yet managed to reach an agreement on the maritime dispute.
This is the second meeting between Kenyatta and Farmaajo, but the beginning of last March was not the happiest and had made us fear the worst in the relations between Nairobi and Mogadishu that as a result had cooled, taking into account the mutual interests for the maritime borders.
In New York, optimism was revealed precisely on the Somali side, where the government spokesman confirmed that the handshake is only the first step towards the resumption of a peaceful and fruitful dialogue.
