EDITORIAL
31-10-2020 by Freddie del Curatolo
Dear readers, times are hard and often those who have suffered and still suffer more than us from this pandemic, because maybe they have lost a relative or a close friend, because they themselves have seen it badly and cannot consider it a simple "bad luck" of life, they know it well and they are angry with those who are making a drama about not being able to return to Kenya soon, because of the Italian Government's provisions but also because of the insecurity and problems that any foreign citizen can encounter in countries where health care has no parachutes or conventions.
Yesterday I, too, tried to play down the irony, using a weapon that people who have read me for twelve years or known me even before malindikenya.net, when I was writing books and making shows, that of irony.
How many of you "repeaters" know me personally?
How many stop me during their holidays to tell me that they found themselves in the books I wrote about "Kenya of the Italians"?
In my editorial yesterday I certainly touched some nerves and I know it, but I assure you that I did it just to try to smile and make people smile at a time when we should react with lightness and spirit to the adversities that rained down on us from outside and, for once, we did not create ourselves even indirectly.
I know, I am here and you are in Italy and it is difficult for you to come here, but you know that it is very hard even for us who have no work to do here and the fact that there is the sun, the sea and the ugali with the mchicha can console us up to a certain point.
As you have been reading for a long time, malindikenya.net risks closure and so far we have received some help from a poor part of our readers. But we know that there are many of them who are in the same situation as us, and more in a country that is increasingly disheartened and where winter is also coming, not only of our discontent.
In short, dear daily visitors to the portal of Italians in Kenya, you have every right to be pissed off, but if it is true that Kenya has taught you something, it is the natural predisposition of its people to smile at the adversities of life and to be as light as African clouds, who enjoy flying low over a profoundly infinite sky.
Leave the resentment, the touchiness and the bad faith to those who have never had this window on life.
I will continue, as long as I can, to keep it wide open to show you the wonder and, from time to time, to take you a little good-naturedly by the backside. Otherwise it really is the end!
Have a good weekend!
Freddie
